Sometimes it seems every other blogger was born inside an Instagram filter. The blogging community is full of talented, creative people, so it’s no wonder that all their websites look so picture-perfect. And then you get bloggers like me: I love writing, but I haven’t got an artistic bone in my body. When I first set up my blog, I stuck it in an out-of-the-box WordPress theme and left it at that. It may not have been beautifully branded, but it worked just fine; I was only there for the words, after all. Except…a few months in, I realised it wasn’t working fine. Partly because potential readers were put off by the unattractive layout—but mainly because it didn’t feel like it was mine. I had wanted my own little corner of the Internet, and my blog wasn’t it. I needed some blog graphics to reflect my personality—but I had no idea where to start.
That’s when I stumbled across Lace & Whimsy.
Lace & Whimsy is a blog and Etsy studio run by the “feminist fairy princess” (and Audrey Hepburn lookalike) Kathy—whose enchanting designs are enough to make you believe in magic. I only had to browse through her illustrations for about five seconds before I was in love—and I knew I wanted her to help me brand my blog.
Just a few days after we first chatted, I had a beautiful new blog header.
Kathy wrote up our design process on her blog here, so you can see exactly how we worked together to create the design. As a total design novice, I was very glad of Kathy’s guidance right from the start: she took the time to get to know my blog and then put together some suggestions, allowing me to give feedback at every stage. Without her, I would never have even thought of anything, but with her help, I ended up with the happy feeling that I had created something really personal—even though she did all the work!
The experience was so positive that I knew it wouldn’t be the last time we worked together. And sure enough…
After Kathy’s illustration helped me fall in love with my blog, I started pushing it further into topics that are important to me. Eventually, I noticed four clear areas starting to stand out, and I wanted to make it easy for my readers to navigate to these.
Once again, Kathy’s designs were spot on, and the process was unbelievably fast and streamlined. We excitedly Snapchatted as she set to work, I had a chance to play around with the colours half way through, and then in under two hours, these gorgeous blog graphics had been installed.
I really can’t emphasise enough how much these designs keep me falling in love with my blog every day. While writing is my passion, it’s Kathy’s graphics that turn it into a place that feels like mine. So if branding isn’t your thing, it doesn’t mean you can’t get your perfect little corner of the Internet. Head over to the Lace & Whimsy studio, and get to work falling in love with your blog!
