Yeah yeah, I know mindfulness is the buzzword of the decade and all that, but it’s dreadfully boring isn’t it? I mean, does anyone actually enjoy that Headspace app? The concept of focusing on nothing for ten minutes seems exhausting to me; this is coming from someone who has to multi-task even while brushing her teeth, for fear of getting too damn bored for dental hygiene. So I thought this mindfulness journal I bought myself for Christmas (JK I bought it for my husband and then decided to keep it, LOL) would be a good way to harness mindfulness a little less…passively.
(Did I just defeat the whole point of mindfulness?)
I am here now is a creative mindfulness journal: it’s full of little creative exercises that require you to get into a more mindful state to complete them. Basically, it tricks people like me with “always-on” brains into slowing down a little bit, under the illusion of doing something. (I always have to be doing something. I don’t even like sleeping.)
You can do the exercises in any order, and they can be quick little drawing/writing games (which I was more drawn to) or longer challenges like watching an ice cube melt in your hand, or even growing a whole plant. (Those ones I instinctively was like “oh cool I’ll do that later” and flicked the page, so I need to actually force myself to do them.)
It’s a really cute idea, but I did still find it just as hard to embrace the slower pace. When one of the exercises asked me to draw clouds and write inside them all the thoughts that popped into my head, this happened:
So it’s not a fool-proof way of becoming Buddha—but it did give me a chance to “live in the now” for five minutes, which is rare for someone whose mobile phone is her best friend.
I’m going to try to do at least one exercise from the mindfulness journal per day, and you can buy it here to do the same. Let me know how you get on, and if you have any tricks that help you be more present!
